National Family Volunteer Day

On Saturday, November 22, 2008, families joined together to volunteer across the nation. For the first year, United Way of Rock River Valley took part and had a great response!  Five organizations (Barbara Olson Center of Hope, Grace Homes, PA Peterson, Rockford Park District, and Rockford Rescue Mission) partnered with United Way to offer local families the opportunity to give back to the community they live in.  With more than 50 participants many good deeds were accomplished.

At Barabara Olson Center of hope family volunteers helped organize their facility and painted numerous rooms around the center.  Families that participated at Grace Homes went to two different nursing home locations and delived roses to the elderly.  At PA Peterson a family helped decorate the building for the holidays.  The Rockford Park District offered the opportunity for the volunteers to put together cookie kits for families over the holidays.  The Rockford Rescue Mission had families participating at there three locations.  At the two thrift stores participants helped sort through donations and at the food pantry they helped sort and serve food.

We all have pride in our community and this was a great opportunity to make the place that we all live, work, and play in a little bit better for all.  To find out how to get involved next year call 815.968.5400 or email volunteer@unitedwayrrv.org.
