Just one day of your life can change someone else’s life forever.
Home fires claim seven lives every day but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. That’s why the American Red Cross is rallying volunteers to install 50,000 free smoke alarms nationwide, as part of our Sound the Alarm events.
In Rockford, more than 200 households have requested our assistance, and we need your help to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes, and that their families know exactly what to do if the alarms ever go off. Join us for a few hours one day to ensure your neighbors are better protected from deadly fire.
Our local event will be held on Saturday, March 22 starting at 9am. It’s a powerful, fun day of serving others and making their homes safer.
Volunteers will be given coffee and breakfast snacks, a free t-shirt, and on-site orientation and training first, then they will be sent out in teams of two or three people to visit local residents. Each team will visit about 5 or 6 homes to install smoke alarms and talk to the families about fire safety. Then they return to the Red Cross to drop off their equipment and paperwork and get lunch, before going home in the early afternoon.
Participants have told us it’s one of their favorite events of the year, because the people they help are so grateful, and they know they are potentially saving lives.
